McGuffins
A McGuffin is a plot device in the form of some goal, desired object, or other motivator that appears to have critical importance to the characters in a film, novel, or play, but actually serves merely as a pretext for the characters to engage with each other and the plot. The audience's focus is on the characters' actions and reactions in pursuit of the McGuffin, rather than on the McGuffin itself.
