Mayiladuthurai

Mayiladuthurai, also known as Mayavaram or Mayuram, is a town in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It serves as the administrative headquarters of Mayiladuthurai district and is located in the Cauvery delta region of southeastern Tamil Nadu.

Historically, the town has been a center of commerce and religion. It is known for its temples, including the Mayuranathar Temple, a major shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, which draws pilgrims from across the region. The town has also been referred to in inscriptions as Mayavaram or Mayuram.

In 2020, Mayiladuthurai district was created by bifurcating from Nagapattinam district, making Mayiladuthurai town the district headquarters. The town is governed as a municipality and serves as a local hub for surrounding rural areas.

Transport and infrastructure are relatively well developed for a delta town. Mayiladuthurai Junction railway station is a junction on the Southern Railway network, linking to major cities such as Chennai, Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli, and Nagapattinam. Road connections include several state highways and a National Highway corridor that passes through the town.

Economy in the district is largely agricultural, supported by canal irrigation from the Cauvery delta. Paddy, coconut, and other crops are common, with related trading activities in the town. The coastal districts nearby support fishing activities, though the town itself is inland.
