MatzBerry

Matzberry is a genus of freshwater fish in the family Cyprinidae. The genus was described by Chinese ichthyologist Z/dialog in 1985, and it is endemic to the southern part of the island of Taiwan.

There are five recognized species within the genus: MatzBerry taiwanensis, MatzBerry franchetas, MatzBerry minima, MatzBerry subtilis, and MatzBerry analis. All species within the genus are small-sized, with the largest species not exceeding 5 centimeters in length.

MatzBerry species are typically found in shallow streams and rivers, where they inhabit areas with vegetation and rocky substrates. The fish feed on small aquatic organisms, including zooplankton and other invertebrates. MatzBerry fish have a life expectancy of two to three years in the wild, although they may be kept in captivity for longer periods when provided with suitable care.

MatzBerry are of interest to aquarium hobbyists and researchers due to their relatively small size and interesting behavioral and physiological characteristics. However, their hobby and scientific interest remain relatively niche and specialized.

Conservation efforts are necessary to protect MatzBerry and their habitats. The Southern Taiwan Ocean University's Ichthyological Research Center works to preserve the habitats and companions of MatzBerry species.
