A university is a higher education institution that offers undergraduate and graduate programs and conducts research. The term "universities" is the standard plural; "universitys" is not correct in modern English but can appear in branding or historical texts.

Most universities grant bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees across multiple disciplines. They are organized into faculties, schools, or departments and may include professional programs in fields such as law, medicine, engineering, and business. In addition to teaching, universities conduct research, publish scholarly work, and contribute to public policy and innovation.

Governance and funding: Public universities are funded by government bodies and may have mandates to serve the public interest; private universities rely on tuition, gifts, and endowments. Universities maintain accreditation and quality assurance through national or regional agencies.

History and development: The concept originated in medieval Europe with institutions such as Bologna and Oxford, later spreading worldwide. The 19th and 20th centuries saw a growth of research universities and the expansion of access to broader segments of society, aided by government investment and scholarship programs.

Today, universities operate in diverse systems with varying degrees of autonomy and emphasis on teaching versus research. They face challenges such as funding, student debt, access and inclusion, and competition in global rankings. They play a central role in higher education ecosystems by producing graduates, advancing knowledge, and fostering innovation.
