Matrixmaterialer, also known as matrix materials or matrixes, are the continuous phase in a composite material. They serve to bind together the reinforcing phase, which can be fibers, particles, or flakes. The matrix material is crucial for the overall properties of the composite, influencing its mechanical strength, stiffness, thermal conductivity, and chemical resistance.

Common matrix materials include polymers, metals, and ceramics. Polymer matrix composites (PMCs) are widely used due to their low density, good mechanical properties, and ease of processing. Examples include epoxy, polyester, and vinyl ester resins. Metal matrix composites (MMCs) offer higher strength and stiffness than unreinforced metals, along with improved high-temperature performance. Aluminum, magnesium, and titanium alloys are often used as matrices. Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are known for their exceptional high-temperature strength, wear resistance, and chemical inertness, making them suitable for demanding applications in aerospace and energy.

The choice of matrix material depends heavily on the intended application and the desired performance characteristics. Factors such as processing temperature, compatibility with the reinforcement, and cost are also important considerations. The interface between the matrix and the reinforcement is critical for load transfer and the overall integrity of the composite. Effective bonding ensures that stresses are efficiently transmitted from the matrix to the stronger reinforcing elements.
