Matrikkeldata

Matrikkeldata refers to the data contained in Matrikkelen, the official Norwegian cadastral register for real properties. The dataset covers properties and their legal and physical characteristics, including how land parcels are identified, their boundaries, and related property information used in administration and planning.

Each property has a unique Matrikkelnummer, a cadastral identifier that typically combines municipality code with a farm number (gårdsnummer), a usage number (bruksnummer), and, where relevant, a unit or sub-number. The data model often includes property geometry (parcels and boundaries), addresses, ownership details, and legal rights or burdens such as easements or mortgages, along with information about buildings located on the parcel and basic land-use attributes.

Matrikkeldata are managed by the Norwegian Mapping Authority (Kartverket) in cooperation with municipalities. Updates to the register come from municipal cadastre authorities and other official sources. The data are disseminated through public portals such as Geonorge, enabling access for mapping, planning, and administrative use.

The data serve a wide range of applications, including land administration, planning and zoning, taxation, real estate transactions, and geographic information systems (GIS) analyses. They support infrastructure development, property valuation, and policy-making by providing an authoritative view of property boundaries, ownership, and building information.

Because Matrikkeldata can contain personal information about property owners and other rights holders, access to specific details is regulated by privacy and public information laws. Aggregated or anonymized data are typically more widely accessible, while sensitive information may be restricted. The dataset is thus used with attention to legal and privacy requirements, balancing public interest with individual rights.
