The "type" of a matrix is determined by its dimensions (number of rows and columns) and the nature of its elements.

Common matrix types include square matrices, where the number of rows equals the number of columns. Within square matrices, there are further classifications like diagonal matrices, where all off-diagonal elements are zero, and identity matrices, which are diagonal matrices with ones on the main diagonal. Row matrices have only one row, and column matrices have only one column.

Special matrix types also arise based on the properties of their elements or their relationships with other matrices. For instance, symmetric matrices are square matrices where the elements are mirrored across the main diagonal (a_ij = a_ji). Skew-symmetric matrices have elements that are opposite in sign across the diagonal (a_ij = -a_ji) and zeros on the diagonal. Orthogonal matrices are square matrices whose transpose is also their inverse.
