Mathgamain

Mathgamain mac Cellaig, commonly anglicized as Mathgamain, is an early medieval Irish figure described in genealogies and annals as a king of Munster. He is associated with the Dál gCais, a kin-group that rose to prominence in the province and would eventually produce Brian Boru. The historical record for Mathgamain is sparse and relies largely on later sources that blend history with legend. Most accounts place his activity in the early 7th century, with a traditional death date around 641.

The available sources present a mixed and sometimes ambiguous picture of Mathgamain’s reign. He is generally portrayed as a figure who helped consolidate Dál gCais influence within Munster and to challenge competing dynasties that had long dominated the region, notably rival branches of Munster’s ruling families.
