Massmätningar, or mass measurements, refers to the process of determining the mass of an object. Mass is a fundamental physical property of matter, representing its resistance to acceleration or the strength of its gravitational attraction. In everyday language, mass is often conflated with weight, but they are distinct concepts. Weight is the force exerted on an object due to gravity, and it varies depending on the gravitational field. Mass, on the other hand, is an intrinsic property of the object and remains constant regardless of location.

Various instruments and techniques are employed for mass measurements. The most common device is the scale or balance. Simple beam balances compare the unknown mass to known masses by balancing torques. Electronic scales, such as spring scales or load cell scales, measure the force exerted by gravity (weight) and then convert it into a mass reading, assuming a standard gravitational acceleration. For highly precise measurements, analytical balances are used, often operating on principles of electromagnetic force compensation.

The standard unit of mass in the International System of Units (SI) is the kilogram (kg). Other common units include grams (g), milligrams (mg), pounds (lb), and ounces (oz). Accurate mass measurements are crucial in numerous fields, including scientific research, manufacturing, commerce, and medicine, ensuring consistency, quality control, and fair trade. The method chosen for mass measurement depends on the required precision, the size of the object, and the surrounding environmental conditions.
