Masskara

MassKara Festival is a major cultural event held annually in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, Philippines. Traditionally staged in October, the festival centers on colorful street dancing, elaborate costumes, and a distinctive display of smiling masks worn by participants. It has grown into one of the country’s most recognized regional celebrations and a key driver of tourism and local pride.

Origins and symbolism: MassKara was established in 1980 by local government officials and business leaders during a period of economic hardship caused by slumps in the sugar industry. The festival was created to lift spirits, promote Bacolod’s image, and attract visitors. The smiling masks, often encrusted with sequins and bright decorations, have become its signature symbol and reflect the city’s nickname, The City of Smiles.

Name and concept: The name MassKara is a blend of “mass” (crowd) and “kara” (face or smile), conveying the idea of many smiling faces. This concept is reinforced by the vibrant mask designs and energetic street performances that characterize the event.

Events and programs: The highlight is the Street Dance Parade, where contingents perform choreographed dances in ornate masks and costumes. Additional activities include nightly performances, float displays, craft fairs, music, and food stalls that showcase local culture and artistry.
