Massamääränä

Massamääränä is a Finnish term that translates to "as a mass fraction" or "by mass" in English. It is a way of expressing the composition of a mixture or solution. When a quantity is described as a massamääränä, it means that the proportion is based on the mass of each component relative to the total mass of the mixture.

For example, if a solution contains 20 grams of salt dissolved in 80 grams of water, the massamääränä of salt in the solution is 20 grams / (20 grams + 80 grams) = 20/100 = 0.2 or 20%. Similarly, the massamääränä of water is 80 grams / 100 grams = 0.8 or 80%. The sum of the massamääränä of all components in a mixture will always equal 1 or 100%.

This concept is widely used in chemistry and other scientific fields for calculations involving concentrations, reactions, and material balances. It is a dimensionless quantity, often expressed as a decimal, a percentage, or a ratio. Understanding massamääränä is crucial for accurately describing and quantifying the composition of substances. It contrasts with other methods of expressing composition, such as molar fraction (amount of substance) or volume fraction.
