Massamuistijärjestelmät, known in English as Mass Storage Systems, refer to technologies and devices designed for long-term storage of large amounts of digital data. These systems are crucial for individuals, businesses, and research institutions that need to retain and access vast quantities of information.

The primary goal of mass storage is to provide a reliable, accessible, and cost-effective way to keep data available for extended periods. This contrasts with primary memory (RAM), which is volatile and used for active processing. Mass storage devices are typically non-volatile, meaning they retain data even when power is removed.

Common examples of mass storage technologies include hard disk drives (HDDs), solid-state drives (SSDs), magnetic tapes, optical media like CDs and DVDs, and flash memory. More advanced solutions involve Network Attached Storage (NAS) and Storage Area Networks (SANs), which offer centralized and scalable storage accessible over a network. Cloud storage services also represent a modern form of mass storage, abstracting the underlying hardware and providing access via the internet.

The selection of a mass storage system depends on factors such as capacity requirements, performance needs (access speed, throughput), reliability, cost, and the intended use case.
