Marsreiser is a term used to describe travel to Mars, encompassing both scientific expeditions and potential tourist or commercial visits. In Norwegian-language discourse, it refers to the concept of reaching the planet, landing on its surface, and conducting activities there. As a field, Marsreiser covers mission architectures, life-support systems, habitat design, and return logistics.

Historically, human interest in Mars dates to early spaceflight literature and NASA studies in the 1960s onward. In the 21st century, governments and private companies have advanced technologies for long-duration spaceflight, such as deep-space propulsion and closed-loop life support. As of the 2020s, no crewed Mars mission has occurred. Space agencies and companies have proposed plans for crewed missions in the 2030s or later, with SpaceX promoting Mars settlement concepts and NASA pursuing precursor missions and robotic exploration to pave the way.

Key challenges include long transit times, radiation exposure, life-support reliability, surface operations in a harsh environment, high costs, and planetary protection considerations.
