Markrelated

The term is not tied to a single standardized standard, but rather to a family of practices that treat marks as nodes in a graph and markrelated as a relation type between those nodes or between a mark and the content it annotates.

In practice, markrelated is used to express how one mark relates to another or to the underlying content. Examples of relation types that may be represented under a markrelated framework include refers-to, overlaps, contains, adjacent-to, precedes, and modifies. Common applications include digital humanities and linguistics, where markrelated supports alignment between transcriptions and manuscript images, cross-referencing linguistic annotations with base corpora, or tracking editorial changes and provenance in document editions. It also appears in annotation tools that manage multiple layers of markup, facilitating queries about how annotations interact or conflict with one another.

Limitations of markrelated concepts stem from the lack of universal standardization. Different projects may adopt distinct relation names, ontologies, or data structures, which can hinder interoperability. Clear definitions of relation semantics and consistent encoding practices are essential for effective use.
