Markkinaosuuspääoma, often translated as market capitalization or market cap, is a measure of a company's total value as determined by its outstanding shares traded on the stock market. It is calculated by multiplying the current market price of a single share by the total number of outstanding shares of the company. For example, if a company has 10 million shares outstanding and each share is trading at $50, its market capitalization would be $500 million.

Market capitalization is a widely used metric to gauge the size of a company. Companies are often categorized into large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap based on their market capitalization. Large-cap companies, generally those with a market cap of $10 billion or more, are typically well-established and stable. Mid-cap companies fall between $2 billion and $10 billion, representing a balance of growth potential and stability. Small-cap companies, with a market cap below $2 billion, are usually younger and have higher growth potential but also carry greater risk.

It is important to note that market capitalization represents the market's perception of a company's value at a specific point in time and can fluctuate significantly with changes in share price and the number of outstanding shares. It is a valuation metric and does not necessarily reflect the company's intrinsic value, earnings, or assets.
