Maniavaiheen

Maniavaiheen is a Finnish term that translates to "manic phase" or "manic episode." It refers to a distinct period of abnormally elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and persistently increased goal-directed activity or energy. This state is a core feature of bipolar disorder, specifically bipolar I disorder, and can also occur in other psychiatric conditions.

During a manic episode, individuals may experience a range of symptoms affecting their thoughts, behavior, and overall functioning. These can include a decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, pressured speech, distractibility, and a sense of inflated self-esteem or grandiosity. People in a manic phase might also engage in reckless or impulsive behaviors, such as excessive spending, risky sexual encounters, or making foolish business investments, often without considering the potential negative consequences.

The duration of a manic episode typically lasts for at least one week, though it can be shorter if hospitalization is required. The intensity of mania can vary, ranging from hypomania, a less severe form, to full-blown mania, which can be debilitating and lead to significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. Diagnosis requires the presence of these characteristic symptoms and their impact on an individual's life. Treatment usually involves a combination of mood-stabilizing medications and psychotherapy to manage symptoms and prevent future episodes.
