Manawydans

Manawydan is a figure from Welsh mythology, primarily appearing in the Mabinogion. He is the son of Llŷr, a sea god, and is brother to Branwen and Bendigeidfran. Manawydan is often depicted as a wise and steadfast character, playing a significant role in the second branch of the Mabinogion, Branwen ferch Llŷr, and subsequently in the third branch, Manawydan fab Llŷr.

In Branwen ferch Llŷr, Manawydan accompanies his brother Bendigeidfran on the ill-fated expedition to Ireland. He witnesses the tragic events involving his sister Branwen and her cruel husband, Matholwch. After the devastating war and the deaths of many of his kin, Manawydan is one of the few survivors and helps to bring about a form of peace.

The branch named after him, Manawydan fab Llŷr, explores his life after the events of Branwen. He marries Rhiannon, the widow of Pwyll, and together they face a series of magical enchantments that plague their land. These enchantments cause various misfortunes, including the land becoming barren and magical creatures stealing their possessions. Manawydan, through his wisdom and resourcefulness, ultimately confronts the source of these curses, which are revealed to be the work of Gwawl fab Nuth, who is seeking revenge for his earlier humiliation. Manawydan's actions restore prosperity and order. He is a character who embodies resilience and the ability to overcome adversity through intelligence and perseverance.
