Manakamana

Manakamana is a Hindu temple in the Gorkha District of Nepal. It is located on a high ridge about 1,300 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views of the Himalayas and the Trisuli River valley. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Bhagawati, a manifestation of Durga, who is believed to be the protector of the area and a fulfiller of wishes.

The name Manakamana is derived from two Sanskrit words: "mana" meaning heart or mind, and "kamana" meaning wish. Pilgrims visit the temple to offer prayers and sacrifices, believing that the goddess will grant their desires. The temple's architecture is a traditional pagoda style, adorned with intricate carvings and religious iconography.

Historically, Manakamana has been a significant pilgrimage site for centuries. It is believed that the temple was built in the 17th century. Access to the temple was traditionally by a strenuous trek. However, in 1998, a cable car system was installed, making the journey much more accessible for devotees and tourists. This cable car, one of the first in Nepal, spans approximately 3 kilometers and takes about 10 minutes to reach the hilltop.

The area surrounding Manakamana is known for its natural beauty and is a popular destination for both religious pilgrims and nature enthusiasts. The annual Dashain festival is a particularly busy time at the temple, drawing large crowds of devotees. The temple complex also includes smaller shrines and facilities for visitors.
