Maltosecontaining refers to substances, foods, or biological materials that contain maltose. Maltose, also known as malt sugar, is a disaccharide composed of two glucose units linked by an alpha(1→4) glycosidic bond. It is a reducing sugar.

Naturally, maltose is found in germinating seeds of cereals, particularly barley, where it is produced during the germination process as a way to break down starch into usable energy for the growing plant. This is why malted grains are a key ingredient in brewing beer and producing malt whiskey, where the enzymatic breakdown of starches yields maltose, which is then fermented by yeast into ethanol.
