Malonaattiesteriryhmän refers to the malonate ester group, a functional group in organic chemistry characterized by the structure R-O-CO-CH2-CO-O-R', where R and R' are typically alkyl or aryl groups. This group is derived from malonic acid, a dicarboxylic acid, and its esters are commonly known as malonic esters.

The methylene group (-CH2-) situated between the two carbonyl groups is particularly acidic due to the electron-withdrawing effect of the adjacent carbonyls. This makes the protons on the methylene carbon readily removable by a base, forming a resonance-stabilized enolate anion. This enolate is a potent nucleophile, a key feature that makes malonic esters highly versatile in organic synthesis.

The malonic ester synthesis is a well-established method for preparing substituted acetic acids. In this process, the malonic ester enolate is alkylated by reacting with an alkyl halide. Subsequent hydrolysis and decarboxylation of the alkylated malonic ester yields a substituted acetic acid. This reaction sequence allows for the introduction of a carbon chain at the alpha position of the ester, which can then be transformed into a carboxylic acid.

Malonic esters are also utilized in other synthetic transformations, including Knoevenagel condensation, Michael addition, and in the preparation of barbiturates and other heterocyclic compounds. Their reactivity and the predictability of the reactions they undergo make them indispensable tools in the repertoire of synthetic organic chemists.
