It is a designation used by car manufacturers to distinguish vehicles produced within a specific period, typically a 12-month cycle, for sale in the following calendar year. The model year system allows manufacturers to introduce incremental changes, updates, or entirely new designs to their vehicles on an annual basis. These changes can range from minor cosmetic adjustments, such as new paint colors or wheel designs, to more significant upgrades in technology, safety features, or powertrain options. Often, a new model year begins production in the latter half of the preceding calendar year. For example, a vehicle designated as a "2024 model year" might begin production in the summer or fall of 2023. This system facilitates marketing efforts, product planning, and inventory management for both manufacturers and dealerships. Consumers often refer to vehicles by their model year when discussing purchases, sales, or comparisons.
