Maksimiisiirtymä is a term used in Estonian sociolinguistics to describe the phase of a language shift when the rate of adoption and adaptation is at its peak. The word is formed from maksimaalne meaning “maximum” and siirtymä meaning “transition,” reflecting its focus on the height of change within a broader process.

The concept refers to a temporally bounded stage in which a target language gains rapid traction across domains such as education, media, public administration, and daily communication. During this period, attitudes, language norms, and social practices shift quickly, often in response to policy reforms, demographic changes, or intensified language planning. Maksimiisiirtymä is typically used as a theoretical construct to distinguish this high-momentum phase from the initial onset of change and from the later stabilization or saturation of language use.

Operationally, researchers may describe maksimiisiirtymä through indicators like rising proportions of the target language in formal settings, increases in bilingual proficiency, and early signs of intergenerational transmission in the language of schooling and family life.
