Maksafunktiohäiriö, also known as liver dysfunction or impaired liver function, refers to a condition where the liver is not functioning properly. The liver performs numerous vital functions, including detoxification of blood, production of bile, synthesis of proteins, and metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. When these functions are compromised, it can lead to a wide range of health problems.

Causes of liver dysfunction are diverse and can include viral hepatitis (hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E), alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), autoimmune hepatitis, genetic disorders like hemochromatosis and Wilson's disease, exposure to toxins and certain medications, and liver cancer. Cirrhosis, a late stage of liver scarring, is a common consequence of chronic liver disease and significantly impairs liver function.

Symptoms of liver dysfunction can vary depending on the underlying cause and severity. Early signs may be subtle, such as fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, and abdominal discomfort. As the condition progresses, more noticeable symptoms can emerge, including jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), swelling in the legs and abdomen (edema and ascites), easy bruising, dark urine, pale stools, and confusion or cognitive changes (hepatic encephalopathy).

Diagnosis typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, blood tests to assess liver enzymes and function, imaging studies like ultrasound or CT scans, and sometimes a liver biopsy. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause, managing symptoms, and preventing complications. This may involve medications, lifestyle changes such as avoiding alcohol, dietary adjustments, and in severe cases, liver transplantation. Early detection and management are crucial for improving outcomes and quality of life for individuals with liver dysfunction.
