Makiling
Makiling refers to Mount Makiling, a dormant volcano located in the provinces of Laguna and Batangas on the island of Luzon, Philippines. It is a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The mountain is known for its rich biodiversity and is a protected area, designated as the Makiling Forest Reserve. This reserve is managed by the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), which uses it as a living laboratory for research and education. The mountain's slopes are covered in lush tropical rainforest, with various species of flora and fauna. Several trails lead to the summit, offering different levels of difficulty. Popular spots within the reserve include the Mud Spring, a geothermal area, and the Peak of the Cloud. The mountain is also associated with local folklore, most notably the legend of Maria Makiling, a benevolent spirit said to inhabit the mountain and protect its natural resources. The mountain's elevation reaches 1,090 meters (3,576 feet) above sea level, and its distinct shape is a prominent landmark in the region. The Makiling Forest Reserve is a vital ecological area, contributing to the conservation of the Philippines' natural heritage.
