Maitén

Maitén is a common name for several species of trees and shrubs in the genus Maytenus, found in South America. The most well-known species, Maytenus boaria, is native to Chile and Argentina. This evergreen tree typically grows to a height of 15-20 meters and features small, leathery leaves and inconspicuous flowers. It is known for its graceful, weeping habit, often lending it the common name "Mayten tree" or "Chilean Mayten."

The wood of the maitén tree is dense and durable, historically used for construction and tool handles. In traditional medicine, various parts of the plant have been used for a range of ailments, though scientific evidence for many of these uses is limited. Another species, Maytenus ilicifolia, also known as maitén or espinheira santa (holy thorn), is popular in Brazilian folk medicine. It is a shrub with spiny leaves and is particularly recognized for its use as a digestive aid and for treating stomach ulcers. Research into the chemical compounds of maitén species has identified several bioactive substances, including antioxidants and potential anti-cancer agents, which are areas of ongoing scientific investigation.
