Maidstone

Maidstone is the county town of Kent, in South East England. It sits on the River Medway, about 32 miles southeast of London, and lies at the southern edge of the North Downs. It serves as the administrative center for Kent County Council and is the principal town of the Borough of Maidstone.

Maidstone has medieval origins and developed as a market town along the Medway. The Archbishop's Palace, once a residence of the archbishops of Canterbury, indicates its historical importance in church and state. The town’s growth is marked by historic streets, riverside spaces, and landmarks such as Mote Park and the Maidstone Museum and Art Gallery.

Today Maidstone has a mixed economy based on retail, services, and light industry. It is a regional transport hub for Kent, accessible by road via the M20 and served by rail with two main stations, Maidstone East and Maidstone West, linking to London and other destinations. The town centre features shopping areas including The Mall and Fremlin Walk, and hosts markets and cultural events throughout the year.

Educational and cultural facilities include libraries, theatres, and museums. The surrounding countryside offers access to the North Downs and local historic sites such as Leeds Castle nearby.
