Maidoneritystä refers to the process of milk secretion in mammals, primarily occurring in the mammary glands. This biological function is essential for the nourishment of offspring, providing them with a nutrient-rich fluid containing proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. The production of milk is a complex hormonal process regulated by a feedback loop involving prolactin, oxytocin, and other hormones.

Prolactin, secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, stimulates the alveolar cells within the mammary glands to produce milk. This hormone's levels rise significantly during pregnancy and after childbirth, initiating and maintaining lactation. Oxytocin, released from the posterior pituitary, plays a crucial role in the milk ejection reflex, also known as the let-down reflex. When an infant suckles or when the mother hears or sees her baby, oxytocin is released, causing the myoepithelial cells surrounding the alveoli to contract, squeezing milk into the ducts and out of the nipple.

The composition of milk can vary between species and even within the same species depending on factors such as the stage of lactation, diet, and the age of the offspring. Colostrum, the first milk produced after birth, is particularly rich in antibodies and immune factors, providing passive immunity to the newborn. The duration and intensity of maidoneritystä are influenced by factors such as the frequency of suckling or milk removal, hormonal signals, and the overall health of the mother.
