Magánhangzóváltozás

Magánhangzóváltozás, or vowel change, refers to a phonological process where a vowel sound within a word or morpheme alters its quality over time or in certain contexts. This is a common phenomenon in language evolution and can occur for a variety of reasons. One significant driver of vowel change is diphthongization, where a monophthong (a single vowel sound) splits into a diphthong (a glide from one vowel to another within the same syllable). Conversely, diphthongs can also monophthongize, becoming single vowel sounds.

Another type of magánhangzóváltozás is vowel raising, where a vowel becomes higher in the mouth (e.g., /a/ becoming /e/), or vowel lowering, where it becomes lower (e.g., /i/ becoming /e/). Vowel fronting and backing involve a shift in the tongue position towards the front or back of the mouth, respectively. These changes are often influenced by surrounding sounds, a process known as assimilation, or by dissimilation, where sounds become more different from each other.
