Maerlants

Maerlants is a collective term used to refer to the literary works attributed to Jacob van Maerlant, a 13th-century Flemish poet and cleric. He is considered one of the most important vernacular writers of his time in the Low Countries. His writings primarily consist of didactic and encyclopedic works, aiming to impart knowledge and moral guidance to a broad audience.

Van Maerlant's oeuvre is extensive and diverse, covering a range of subjects from history and natural sciences to theology and chivalry. Among his most famous works are "Historie van Troyen," a retelling of the Trojan War, and "Der Naturen Bloeme," an encyclopedic treatise on animals and nature. He also wrote "Spiegel Historiael," a vast compilation of world history, and religious texts such as "Wapene Martijn."

His writing style is characterized by its clarity, accessibility, and didactic purpose. Van Maerlant's aim was to make complex information understandable to a wider public, employing a relatively straightforward and accessible Middle Dutch. His influence was significant, contributing to the development of vernacular literature and the dissemination of knowledge during the Middle Ages.
