Maemo is a free and open-source software platform developed by Nokia for its smartphones. It is based on the Debian Linux distribution. Maemo was designed to provide a rich, desktop-like user experience on mobile devices. Its key features included a multitasking interface, advanced web browsing capabilities, and a platform for third-party application development. The platform's user interface was known for its ease of use and elegant design. Maemo was first introduced in 2005 with the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet and later powered devices like the Nokia N800, N810, N900, and N950.

The development of Maemo was a significant effort by Nokia to compete in the growing smartphone market with a Linux-based alternative to existing operating systems. It fostered a community of developers who created a variety of applications, many of which were distributed through the Maemo Garage. While Maemo was well-received by its user base for its flexibility and open nature, Nokia eventually shifted its focus to the MeeGo platform, a merger of Maemo and Intel's Moblin, and later adopted Windows Phone.
