Macrolepidopterans

Macrolepidopterans are a group of insects belonging to the order Lepidoptera, which also includes microlepidopterans. This classification distinguishes larger moths and butterflies from their smaller counterparts. The term "macrolepidopteran" is not a formal taxonomic rank but rather a descriptive grouping. Generally, macrolepidopterans are characterized by their larger size, with wingspans typically exceeding 3 centimeters, although this is not a strict rule. The larvae of macrolepidopterans are commonly known as caterpillars, and like all lepidopterans, they undergo complete metamorphosis, transitioning from egg to larva, pupa, and finally adult.

This group encompasses the well-known families of true butterflies (Rhopalocera) and most families of moths (Heterocera). Butterflies are typically diurnal, possess clubbed antennae, and hold their wings vertically at rest. Moths, on the other hand, are often nocturnal, have feathery or thread-like antennae, and usually rest with their wings spread flat. The diversity within macrolepidopterans is vast, with millions of species found across virtually every terrestrial habitat worldwide. They play significant roles in ecosystems, acting as pollinators, herbivores, and food sources for other animals.
