Macrofibers

Macro</b>fibers are a type of fiber used in concrete and other cementitious materials to improve their mechanical properties. Unlike microfibers, which are typically made of synthetic materials and have diameters on the order of microns, macrofibers are larger, with lengths typically ranging from 10 mm to 60 mm and diameters from 0.3 mm to 1.0 mm. They are commonly made from steel, polypropylene, or polyvinyl alcohol.

The primary function of macrofibers is to enhance the toughness and post-cracking behavior of concrete. When concrete cracks, macrofibers bridge these cracks, preventing them from widening and propagating. This significantly improves the flexural strength, impact resistance, and durability of the material. They also help to reduce shrinkage cracking and improve resistance to abrasion.

Macro</b>fibers are incorporated into the concrete mix during the mixing process. Their dosage is typically expressed as a percentage of the total concrete volume or by weight. The type and amount of macrofiber used depend on the specific performance requirements of the application. Common uses for macrofiber-reinforced concrete include industrial floors, pavements, precast elements, and shotcrete applications where enhanced durability and crack control are essential.
