MacGregors

The MacGregor clan is one of the oldest and most famous of the Scottish Highland clans. Their traditional territory was centered around Loch Awe in Argyll. The name MacGregor is derived from Gregor, a son of King Alpin of Scotland. Historically, the MacGregors were known for their fierce independence and a reputation for being both brave warriors and sometimes troublesome outlaws. This led to periods of persecution and the clan being outlawed, notably in the early 17th century.

Despite these challenges, the MacGregors persevered. A significant figure in their history is Rob Roy MacGregor, who lived in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. His life, often romanticized, became the subject of Sir Walter Scott's novel "Rob Roy," which further cemented the clan's fame. The clan crest features a lion's head erased, and their motto is "S' Rioghal mo dhream," meaning "Royal is my race." Today, the MacGregor clan society works to unite descendants and preserve their heritage.
