Maapähklites

Maapähklites, known botanically as Arachis hypogaea, are legumes that are widely consumed as nuts. Despite their common name, they are not true nuts but rather members of the pea and bean family. They grow underground, a characteristic that gives them their scientific name, meaning "earth nut." Originating in South America, maapähklites cultivation has spread globally, with major production centers in China, India, and the United States.

The maapähklites plant produces yellow flowers that, after pollination, elongate and grow downwards into the soil, where the fruit, or pod, develops. Each pod typically contains one to four seeds, commonly referred to as maapähklites. These seeds are rich in protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals, making them a nutritious food source. They are consumed in various forms, including roasted, salted, as peanut butter, or as an ingredient in numerous culinary dishes and confections.

Maapähklites are a significant agricultural commodity, supporting economies and providing sustenance for millions. However, for some individuals, maapähklites can trigger severe allergic reactions, a condition known as peanut allergy. This allergy is one of the most common food allergies, and individuals with this condition must strictly avoid all maapähklites products. The cultivation and consumption of maapähklites are thus influenced by both their nutritional value and the public health considerations related to allergies.
