Maantieviraston

Maantieviraston was a Finnish government agency responsible for the administration and development of the road network. Its primary tasks included planning, constructing, and maintaining public roads, as well as managing road traffic and ensuring road safety. The agency was also involved in the development of traffic policies and regulations.

The history of Maantieviraston traces back to earlier road administration bodies in Finland. It was established as a separate entity to consolidate and streamline road-related functions under a single authority. Throughout its existence, the agency played a significant role in Finland's infrastructure development, contributing to economic growth and societal connectivity.

In 2010, Maantieviraston was merged with the Finnish Maritime Administration (Merenkulkulaitos) and the Finnish Road Enterprise (Tiehallinto) to form the Finnish Transport Agency (Liikennevirasto). This merger was part of a broader governmental reform aimed at creating more integrated and efficient transport administration. The functions previously carried out by Maantieviraston were subsequently integrated into the broader responsibilities of the new Finnish Transport Agency, which later became the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (Väylävirasto) in 2019.
