Maanalämpöä

Maanalämpöä refers to the heat energy stored within the Earth. This thermal energy originates from two primary sources: the residual heat from the planet's formation and the decay of radioactive isotopes within the Earth's core and mantle. The temperature of the Earth increases with depth, a phenomenon known as the geothermal gradient.

This naturally occurring heat can be harnessed for various purposes, most notably for geothermal energy production. Geothermal power plants utilize the steam or hot water found underground to drive turbines and generate electricity. In addition, geothermal heat pumps can be used for direct heating and cooling of buildings by circulating fluid through underground pipes. The shallow subsurface temperatures are relatively stable year-round, making this a highly efficient method for climate control.

The availability and accessibility of geothermal resources vary significantly by location. Areas with volcanic activity or thin crust often have higher-temperature resources closer to the surface, making them ideal for large-scale power generation. However, even in regions without such pronounced geological features, geothermal heat pumps can be implemented effectively. Research continues into more advanced methods of extracting and utilizing this subterranean heat.
