Maailmasõdade

Maailmasõdade is the Estonian term for World Wars. It most commonly refers to the two global conflicts that occurred in the 20th century: World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945). These wars involved a vast majority of the world's countries, including all of the great powers, forming two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Central Powers in World War I, and the Allies and the Axis powers in World War II.

World War I, often called the Great War, was characterized by trench warfare and unprecedented casualties. It led to the collapse of empires and redrew the map of Europe. World War II was even more widespread and destructive, marked by the Holocaust, the use of nuclear weapons, and the rise of new global superpowers.

The impact of both Maailmasõdade was profound, shaping international relations, economies, and societies for decades. They resulted in significant loss of life, widespread destruction, and fundamental changes in political ideologies and global power structures. The memory and lessons learned from these conflicts continue to influence international policy and historical understanding.
