Maadoitus, often translated as grounding, is a fundamental electrical safety concept. It involves connecting electrical systems and equipment to the earth, a large conductive body that serves as a common reference point for electrical potential. The primary purpose of maadoitus is to protect people and property from electrical hazards.

When an electrical fault occurs, such as a live wire coming into contact with the metal casing of an appliance, the casing can become energized. Without a proper maadoitus connection, this energized casing would pose a severe risk of electric shock to anyone who touches it. A maadoitus wire provides a low-resistance path for this fault current to flow directly to the earth. This rapid flow of current typically causes a fuse to blow or a circuit breaker to trip, disconnecting the power supply and making the situation safe.

Beyond safety, maadoitus also plays a role in the proper functioning of some electronic equipment. It can help to stabilize voltage levels and reduce electrical noise, which can interfere with sensitive electronic signals.
