MVHRjärjestelmään refers to a Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery system. This type of system is designed to provide continuous ventilation for a building while minimizing energy loss. It achieves this by extracting stale, moist air from the interior of the building and supplying fresh, filtered air from the outside. The core component of an MVHR system is a heat exchanger. As the stale outgoing air passes through the heat exchanger, it transfers a significant portion of its thermal energy to the incoming fresh air. This pre-heated fresh air is then distributed throughout the building.

MVHR systems are particularly beneficial in modern, well-insulated, and airtight buildings where natural ventilation can be insufficient and lead to poor indoor air quality, moisture buildup, and condensation. By mechanically exchanging air, MVHR ensures a constant supply of fresh air, removing pollutants, odors, and excess humidity. The heat recovery aspect significantly reduces the need to reheat the incoming fresh air, thereby lowering heating costs and the building's overall energy consumption. Installation typically involves ductwork running to and from various rooms, with vents for air extraction (e.g., bathrooms, kitchens) and air supply (e.g., bedrooms, living areas). Filters are incorporated to clean both the incoming and outgoing air, preventing dust, pollen, and other particles from entering the building.
