It is owned by NBCUniversal News Group, a division of Comcast, and operates alongside NBC News as a sister network. The channel began in 1996 as a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC, intended to complement NBC's news operations with a dedicated cable outlet and a companion website, msnbc.com. Microsoft sold its stake to NBC in 2005, and the channel has since been operated by NBCUniversal.
