MSNBC is an American cable news channel known for 24-hour news coverage and political commentary. It is owned by NBCUniversal News Group, a division of Comcast, and operates alongside NBC News as a sister network. The channel began in 1996 as a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC, intended to complement NBC's news operations with a dedicated cable outlet and a companion website, msnbc.com. Microsoft sold its stake to NBC in 2005, and the channel has since been operated by NBCUniversal.

Historically, MSNBC mixed straight news during the day with opinion-driven programs in the evenings. In the 2010s the network broadened its lineup with more prominent opinion shows and personalities, establishing a distinct primetime block that has included The Rachel Maddow Show, All In with Chris Hayes, The Beat with Ari Melber, and The ReidOut with Joy-Ann Reid, along with Morning Joe in the morning hours. The shift toward opinion programming drew both criticism and praise and positioned MSNBC as a counterpoint to other cable news outlets.

MSNBC distributes through traditional cable and satellite systems, and it maintains a digital presence via msnbc.com and the Peacock streaming service, with live streams and clips available online. Its audience and editorial stance have made it a key player in U.S. political media, particularly during national elections, debates, and policy discussions.
