MPCAPABLE is a software framework and set of standards intended to enable privacy-preserving collaboration across distributed data systems. It centers on secure multi-party computation (MPC) to allow multiple organizations to compute joint analytics without exposing their raw data. The project defines a common interface, protocol library, and governance model to support interoperable implementations.

Origin and development: The MPCAPABLE initiative was announced in 2023 by a consortium of universities and technology partners seeking to lower barriers to cross-institution data analysis in regulated sectors. The effort produced a reference specification, a modular protocol stack, and a reference runtime designed for cloud-native deployment.

Key features include support for multiple MPC protocols (secret sharing, garbled circuits, and hybrid approaches), automatic protocol selection based on data size and latency, a high-level analytics language that compiles to MPC circuits, adapters for common data formats, secure logging, and audit-ready execution traces.

Architecture and deployment: MPCAPABLE comprises a protocol layer responsible for cryptographic operations, an orchestration layer that manages rounds and fault tolerance, a data governance module for policy enforcement, and an integration layer for data sources and sinks. It is designed to run on-premises, in public clouds, or in hybrid environments.

Applications and reception: Early pilots focus on healthcare data collaboration, financial risk analysis, and cross-border analytics.
