MOSFETlaitteet, short for Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor devices, are a type of semiconductor device widely used in modern electronics. They are fundamental building blocks for integrated circuits, including microprocessors, memory chips, and power control systems. The operation of a MOSFET relies on controlling the conductivity of a semiconductor channel by applying an electric field. This field is created by a voltage applied to a gate electrode, which is insulated from the channel by a thin layer of oxide.

There are four main terminals in a MOSFET: the gate (G), the source (S), the drain (D), and the body (B) or substrate. The voltage applied to the gate modulates the charge carrier concentration in the channel between the source and the drain, thereby controlling the current flow. MOSFETs can be categorized into two main types: enhancement-mode and depletion-mode. Enhancement-mode MOSFETs are normally off and require a gate voltage to create a conducting channel, while depletion-mode MOSFETs are normally on and require a gate voltage to deplete the channel and reduce conductivity.

Furthermore, MOSFETs are classified based on the type of charge carriers that form the conducting channel. N-channel MOSFETs (NMOS) use electrons as the majority carriers, while P-channel MOSFETs (PMOS) use holes. Combinations of NMOS and PMOS transistors form complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) logic, which is the most common technology used in digital integrated circuits due to its low power consumption. The small size, high switching speed, and low power consumption of MOSFETs have made them indispensable in the design of virtually all modern electronic systems.
