MITwide

MITwide is a term used at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to describe initiatives, programs, or services that span the entire institute, crossing school and departmental boundaries. It is not a formal organizational unit; rather, it functions as a descriptive umbrella for cross-cutting activities intended to align policies, standards, and resources across MIT’s Schools, laboratories, and research centers.

Examples of MITwide activity include information technology services and policy development that apply to the whole campus, centralized procurement and financial services, shared research administration functions, and institute-wide safety, compliance, and environmental health programs. MITwide efforts commonly involve cross-campus governance structures, with representatives from multiple schools and central administration. These efforts are typically led by a central office or senior administrator (for example, offices responsible for information technology, finance, or research administration) and supported by staff in central services.

The goals of MITwide initiatives are to standardize practices where appropriate, reduce duplication, enable collaboration across disciplines, and optimize the allocation of resources. They seek to balance the autonomy and needs of individual departments with the benefits of institute-wide consistency. Challenges include coordinating across diverse units, managing budget and staffing constraints, and ensuring broad stakeholder input.
