MFVs

MFV is an acronym that can refer to several terms depending on the context. In maritime usage the most common meaning is Motor Fishing Vessel, a fishing boat powered by an internal combustion engine. MFVs cover a broad range of boat sizes and gear configurations, from small coastal vessels to larger trawlers and longliners. They are distinguished from sailing fishing vessels by propulsion method and typically carry on-board systems for processing or storing catch, as well as deck machinery such as winches and nets or lines.

In regulatory terms MFVs are registered and flagged to a country and governed by national fisheries laws as well as international conventions. They may be subject to vessel-length and tonnage classifications, fishing quotas, vessel monitoring systems, logbook and catch reporting, and safety standards under SOLAS and local port state control. Crew sizes vary; MFVs often employ a skipper and several crew, with specialized roles for gear deployment, processing, and cargo handling. Environmental and safety considerations include fuel efficiency, emissions, sea-keeping, and safety equipment such as life-saving appliances.

Other uses of MFV exist in different sectors, where the same acronym may stand for terms like Multi-Function Vehicle or other project-specific designations. These are not standardized and require context to interpret.
