MCPgewricht

MCPgewricht refers to the metacarpophalangeal joint. These are the knuckles of your hand, located between the metacarpal bones of the palm and the proximal phalanges of the fingers. There are five MCP joints in each hand, one for each finger. They are condyloid joints, allowing for a wide range of motion, including flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, and circumduction. This complex movement is crucial for fine motor skills and grasping.

The MCP joints are supported by a joint capsule, collateral ligaments, and a volar plate. The collateral ligaments provide stability, preventing excessive side-to-side movement, while the volar plate helps to prevent hyperextension. Diseases and injuries affecting the MCP joints can significantly impact hand function. Common conditions include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and sprains or dislocations resulting from trauma. Pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced range of motion are typical symptoms. Treatment often involves conservative measures like rest, ice, medication, and physical therapy, but surgical intervention may be necessary in severe cases.
