Mõõtmisvigade, or measurement errors, are the discrepancies between a measured value and the true value of a quantity. These errors are an inherent part of any measurement process and can arise from various sources. Understanding and quantifying these errors is crucial for interpreting the reliability and accuracy of any experimental result.

There are generally two main categories of measurement errors: systematic errors and random errors. Systematic errors consistently affect measurements in the same direction. Examples include miscalibration of instruments, parallax error when reading a scale, or environmental factors that are not accounted for. These errors can often be identified and corrected if their cause is understood.

Random errors, on the other hand, vary unpredictably from one measurement to another. They are often due to limitations in the precision of the measuring instrument or uncontrolled fluctuations in experimental conditions. While individual random errors cannot be predicted, their effect can be reduced by taking multiple measurements and averaging them. The average of several measurements is generally closer to the true value than any single measurement.

The uncertainty associated with a measurement is a way to express the range within which the true value is likely to lie, considering the accumulated errors. This uncertainty is typically reported alongside the measured value. Reducing measurement errors involves careful selection of instruments, proper experimental procedures, and meticulous data analysis.
