Instruments may have inherent limitations, such as limited resolution, calibration drift, or susceptibility to environmental factors like temperature or vibration. Improper use or maintenance of measuring tools can also introduce significant errors.

Another significant source of problems lies in the object or phenomenon being measured. Some properties are inherently difficult to define or isolate, leading to ambiguity. For instance, measuring subjective qualities like customer satisfaction or the effectiveness of a complex system presents unique challenges. The act of measurement itself can sometimes alter the quantity being measured, a phenomenon known as the observer effect.
