Their primary function is to indicate to other devices on the network that a station intends to transmit data. This signaling mechanism helps prevent collisions, where multiple devices attempt to transmit simultaneously, leading to corrupted data.

The specific implementation of märkningssignaler can vary. In some older wired Ethernet standards, for instance, a carrier sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD) protocol was used. Before transmitting, a device would "listen" to the channel to detect if it was idle. If the channel was clear, it would then proceed to transmit.
