Mälestamine

Mälestamine is the act or process of remembering or commemorating persons, events, or periods. In Estonian, mälestamine is a noun form related to the verb mälestama, meaning to remember or to commemorate. The term covers both individual recollection and collective memory practices, including public rituals and cultural productions. Etymologically, it combines mälestus (memory or remembrance) with the suffix -amine to denote an action or process.

The scope includes private memory—family stories, personal diaries—as well as public memory, which is often expressed through monuments, memorials, plaques, museums, archives, and commemorative ceremonies. Annual remembrance days, naming of streets, or the restoration of historic sites are common forms of mälestamine. In education and media, mälestamine shapes curricula, exhibitions, and documentary projects.

Memory politics: mälestamine is not neutral; communities negotiate which events, persons, and narratives are highlighted or memorialized, and how. Debates may concern representation, trauma, and inclusion of marginalized groups. Contested memory can influence public space and policy, including compensation, reconciliation, or apologies.

In the digital age, mälestamine also takes place online through social media remembrance, digital archives, crowdsourced memorials, and virtual exhibitions, expanding access and participation beyond traditional sites.
