Lümfaatika

Lümfaatika refers to the study and medical treatment of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, tissues, and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials. It plays a crucial role in the immune system and maintaining fluid balance. Lymphatic fluid, or lymph, circulates through the body, collecting waste products and returning them to the bloodstream.

Disorders of the lymphatic system can lead to various health issues. Lymphedema, a common condition, occurs when lymph fluid accumulates in the tissues, causing swelling, typically in the arms or legs. This can be primary, meaning it's a congenital condition, or secondary, often resulting from surgery, radiation therapy, infection, or injury that damages the lymphatic vessels or nodes. Other lymphatic system issues include lymphangitis, an inflammation of the lymphatic vessels, and lymphadenopathy, the swelling of lymph nodes, which can be a sign of infection or more serious diseases like cancer.

Lümfaatika involves diagnostic methods such as physical examination, lymphoscintigraphy, and ultrasound to assess the function and structure of the lymphatic system. Treatments can include manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), a specialized massage technique to encourage lymph flow, compression therapy using bandages or garments, exercise, and in some cases, surgery. The goal of lümfaatika is to manage swelling, reduce pain, improve mobility, and prevent complications associated with lymphatic dysfunction.
